OKLAHOMA CITY - Most squad cars are filled with the necessities like guns, helmets and handcuffs.

Oklahoma County Sheriff's Deputy Susan Perkins has a little something extra in her squad car.

"Pet food is like gold to me. I'd rather have that than anything," said Perkins.

During her daily duties serving warrants, Deputy Perkins also serves unwanted and abandoned animals.

Perkins works two jobs, drives a 20-year old car and wears thrift store clothes. It helps ensure the needs of others are always met first.

"I was at the WalMart and I watched a lady come to the cat food aisle with three items in her cart and she disappeared. She came back with nothing in her cart. I said 'Ma'am where are your food items? Go back and get your food and I'll take care of the cat food.' So, we threw a 30 lb bag of food and off she went. It's more common than you know," Perkins told NewsChannel 4.

Lori Palmer was recently at a Family Dollar, and witnessed Susan's generosity of buying pet food for struggling families first-hand.

"It just brought tears to my eyes. I thought it was the most wonderful thing anyone has ever done," said Palmer.

Brian Baxter with First Fidelity helped NewsChannel 4 Pay It 4Ward. "I just want to thank you for nominating Susan. For all she does in the community for people and pets, on behalf of First Fidelity I want to present $400 to pay it forward."

Deputy Perkins was recently surprised with the $400 blessing.

Perkins said the timing was perfect, "My 20-year old car was backed into last week. And the people left. Hit and run. It's at the shop and I've got a deductible. You know how much that is? $400? 400 dollars! What a blessing."

Sheriff Whetsel says she is one of many unsung heroes of law enforcement.

"They don't do it for glory. They don't do it for 15 seconds of fame. They do it because they want to help," said Whetsel.

Deputy Perkins says she pledges to continue blessing the people and pets who cross her path daily.
